IM
Today I had a great IM conversation with Susan. It is great to be able to network with people without leaving my house. I do use IM with in my school. However, I seldom open it up. My job includes teaching, manning the library desk, solving some tech issues, teacher tech training, and creating collaborative projects. I have found that if I have IM on, I feel bad if I am away from my computer and don't respond instantly. What do you think if someone is "online" but then doesn't respond quickly?

Personally if someone doesn’t respond to me right away I just think they are away from their computer, talking to someone in person or on the phone. Most times it doesn’t bother. That’s especially true when I’m just trying to chat with a friend or coworker. One option of course is to change your status to let folks know you are not at your computer. I try to do this but I must admit I don’t always remember.
The only time I guess I expect a more timely response is when I’m using a chat widget on a library’s website that is specifically setup to chat with a librarian. Then I expect a timely response. That said I don’t expect them to be able to help me instantly. I realize they may be busy helping other customers. I have no problem with that but I’d like them to acknowledge me and just tell me they are helping someone else and will be with me as soon as possible. To me it’s the same as if I called with a question and they had to put me on hold.
